Valley Crest Alice 39 named Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society Cow of the Year

Valley Crest Alice 39 EX-93-4E

At the recent 2013 Field Day and AGM, the Canadian Milking Shorthorn Society was proud to present the 2013 Cow of the Year Award to Valley Crest Alice 39, owned by Ivan and Diane Naylor of Kleefeld, Manitoba.  The award was voted on by members of the CMSS this spring as four top Milking Shorthorn cows were nominated for this award based on their own performance and the performance of their progeny.

Alice 39 was bred by Harold and Scott Patterson of the Master Breeder Valley Crest herd and was purchased by the Naylor Family when they purchased the Valley Crest herd several years ago.  Sired by Valley Crest Monster, she is classified EX-93-4E.

Success in a number of categories led Alice 39 to be named Cow of the Year.  Besides being classified EX-93-4E, she was also the 5th place Mature Cow at the World Dairy Expo in 2008.  A high component testing cow, her best record came at 10 years old with 8882 kgs of milk at 4.5% fat and 3.1% protein.  She produced just shy of 50,000 kgs of milk in 7 lactations.

Alice’s eldest daughter is scored EX-92, and she has four other daughters in the Lady Grove herd.  Another of her daughters was the high selling lot in the 2012 National Sale.  Alice has also had embryos sell to the United Kingdom and she has a son in use in a herd in Ontario.

Other cows nominated for the 2013 Cow of the Year Award were Prinsville Logic Starshine, owned by Prinsville Dairy Farms, Bloomfield, ON; Lynmark NS Clarica, owned by Lynmark Farms, Norwood, ON; and Northend Famous Player-P, owned by Brodie and Brenda Cupples, Thorsby, AB.
