Milk production in the United States during the fourth quarter totaled 52.5 billion pounds, up 2.4 percent from the same three months last year.
The average number of milk cows in the nation during the quarter was 9.35 million head, 10,000 head more than the July through September quarter, and 26,000 head more than the same period last year.
Meanwhile, the USDA reports that production per cow in the 23 major states averaged 1,931 pounds for December, 35 pounds above the same month last year. This is the highest production per cow for the month of December since records have been kept.
