Record-Breaking “Party at the Polo” Sale: Tahora Pony Fetches $77,000 as Dairy Elite Command Premium Prices

The picturesque Tahora Farms in Canterbury, New Zealand transformed into the dairy industry’s hottest destination last weekend as nearly 500 enthusiasts gathered for the much-anticipated “Party at the Polo” sale. This unique event combined elite dairy genetics with equestrian flair, resulting in some truly impressive prices that have the industry buzzing!

The crowd was treated to an exciting polo match before the auction, with outstanding hospitality featuring fresh seafood, succulent BBQ lamb, and traditional cucumber sandwiches. The atmosphere was electric as bidders prepared to compete for exceptional animals from three renowned breeding families: Geddes, Gilbert, and Norton.

The star of the show was undoubtedly the polo pony “Rikki,” who commanded an eye-popping $77,000 from an Australian buyer. On the dairy side, the magnificent Tahora Sidekick Legacy 2, a VG 89 (max) Holstein and 2025 Grand Champion of the New Zealand Dairy Event, sold for $30,000 for a half share.

Other notable sales included:

  • Tahora Pharo Abriana, EX: $26,000
  • Tahora Alligator Floris: $18,500
  • Glenalla Reynolds Dahlia (T) Ayrshire: $18,000
  • Snowfed Chief Jessica: $16,000
  • Tahora Tatoo Tottie: $14,000

The 75 cattle averaged an impressive $7,453, with the 56 Holsteins averaging $7,796, while 17 Jerseys averaged $5,882. A single Ayrshire fetched $18,000 and a Brown Swiss went for $4,500.

The event showcased the exceptional breeding programs of these multi-generation farming families. The Geddes family’s Tahora Holstein stud traces back to 1921, with over a century of show ring excellence. Meanwhile, the Gilbert family’s Glenalla and Snowfed operations demonstrated their commitment to quality across multiple breeds.

Auctioneer Brian Leslie OAM kept the bidding lively, with Rural Livestock and Carrfields serving as agents for this memorable event.

The “Party at the Polo” sale once again proves that New Zealand continues to be a global powerhouse in dairy genetics, with international buyers willing to pay premium prices for these exceptional animals.
