John and Cherie Gardiner clinched the premier exhibitor award at the Victorian Winter Fair with a triple win in the intermediate section.
Recent mother of twin calves Avonlea Aftershock Dorinda took out both the supreme champion and best udder awards, with the Gardiners’ Avonlea Selector Figsie named as the reserve champion.
“It’s very pleasing,” Mr Gardiner said after the presentation.
“We sold the mother of the cow that won at International Dairy Week three years ago and that is the calf she had before we sold her.
“She calved four weeks ago with twin heifer calves so she has done remarkably well to be in this form in that short period of time. She goes back to a fully imported cow from North America and she is by Aftershock, who we think a fair bit of.”
Associate judge Nicola Paulger said the supreme exhibit, which won the three years in milk class, was the sort of cow she would like to own.
“She was longest-framed animal in the intermediate section and obviously the best udder,” she said.
“She is just three weeks fresh from having twins so that is a pretty big feat for a young cow.
“Even though you could see she was a little fresh she just stood out — she’s a beautiful exhibit.”
The Gardiners, who milk 220-240 cows year-round, also took out reserve champion senior cow with Glenunga Wind Butterbrook.
The intermediate red championship went to Bluechip EV Sweet Apple shown by Jennings, Hallyburton and Salmon.
Dee cannot quite recall what he paid for Hullabaloo Bolton Sundae at his local sub-branch sale a few years ago, but he now has a pretty good idea of what she is worth. The six-year-old, from Mr Dee’s Clydevale Holsteins stud, at Cohuna, was named supreme senior exhibit at the Victorian Winter Fair in Bendigo last week, beating a strong field of autumn-calved cows to the show’s top prize and the best udder championship.
Canadian judge Gerald Coughlin said the cow had caught his eye from her age class and was “an easy win”.
“She’s a terrific framed cow,” he said.
“She has some width in her head that she carries all the way through her chest and back to her rump.
“She tracks on a good set of feet and legs and she has a terrific mammary system with a strong, medium suspensory. Her rib structure is almost perfect.”
The supreme junior exhibit, owned by Sunrise Holsteins’ Michaela Thompson and shown by Dean Malcolm, was Bluechip Airlift Paradise.
Ms Thompson bought the heifer at the Bluechip dispersal sale last October, but it has remained in the Malcolms’ showing team, for which she has worked for eight years.
“We always loved the heifer,” Mr Malcolm said. “We took her to International Dairy Week in January and she got a third, but since then she has really developed a lot.
“She’s grown and ribbed out and was in beautiful form coming into this show.”
Red junior champion was Fleyas Malone Jane shown by Andrew and Erin Cullen, of Tatura. The win helped Bluechip Genetics pick up the premier breeder award for the show.
The red junior champion, Fleyas Malone Jane, came third in a large field in the open winter calf born between July 1 and September 30 last year.
Owned and shown by Andrew and Erin Cullen, of Tatura, she was bought last year for the couple’s show team.
“We bought her for her family lines, but we did want a pretty red show calf,” Mrs Cullen said. “She has a beautiful personality.”
