Lely pays about $122 million to end robotics lawsuit

After three years of litigation, the second of three class action lawsuits against dairy robotic manufacturers has been resolved. Earlier this month, the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota authorized a final settlement for Lely to replace the milkers or compensate farmers. Attorneys for the dairymen estimate the terms to be worth more than $122 million. Almost 400 dairy producers in the United States alleged that Lely’s Astronaut A4 robotic milkers, marketed between 2011 and 2018, did not perform as advertised and had faults that harmed cow health, milk output, and quality. Last year, DeLaval agreed to pay $55 million to dairy farmers in a Missouri District Court for identical claims concerning faulty equipment. DeLaval is still facing a class action lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota, alleging that a newer model robotic milker is equally faulty.
