While the number of cows in U.S. dairy herds is growing, Canadian dairy cow and heifer numbers declined slightly in the past year, according to a semi-annual report from USDA and Statistics Canada.

As of Jan. 1, 2015, Canadian producers had an estimated 956,700 cows on their farms, a decline of about 2,600 head from a year earlier. Dairy replacement heifers (1 year old or older) totaled 444,600 head, up 400. Canadian replacement heifers per 100 cows totaled 46.5.
