Dairy’s Finest showcase sale sets new Australian records

BROOKBORA PGRS CHROME LOVE LIES
• Top Price @ $20,000 at the Dairy Finest Sale
• Australian record price for Aus Bred Jersey Heifer
• Type +108 & MAM +114

A virtual sale of Dairy’s Finest Jersey cows has set a new Australian record average price and a new top price for an Australian-bred heifer.

All 26 lots were cleared at the May 23 Jersey Australia sale, with an average price of $8178 and top of $20,000 achieved.

Jersey Australia chairman Chris MacKenzie described the result as exceptional and said that it reflected confidence in the industry and demand for Jersey cows.

The sale at Kings Ville Jerseys in Drouin West, Vic marked the start of Jersey Australia’s annual four-day conference.

The live auction was conducted by Brian Leslie of Dairy Livestock Services and online by Elite Livestock Auctions.

The cows weren’t on site but were presented in photos, a concept that Mr MacKenzie said worked very well.

“Interest was very strong and the range of buyers was very impressive,” he said.

“We had top animals and a top sale, and we got a top price, and it augers very well for the industry.”

Mr MacKenzie said he expected the virtual sale concept to be used in the future.

“It means vendors don’t have to go to the trouble and cost of transporting and preparing their lots, but buyers still have access to all the relevant information and photos,” he said.

Mr Leslie said he believed the $8178 average was a new Australian record for Jerseys.

“I thought it was the best catalogue we’ve put together. The industry is in good shape and the Jersey breed is rolling along very well, but it still exceeded all expectations,” he said.

“The top price of $20,000 was very high but there was strong demand all the way through for a total clearance.”

The conference is being organised by the Central Gippsland Club and president Reece Attenborough said the sale produced an amazing result.

“We have to thank all the vendors for putting their best lots forward,” he added.

The top price of $20,000 was achieved by Brookbora PGRS Chrome Love Lies sold by Rob, Sandra and Daniel Bacon of Brookbora Jerseys, Parrabel Genetics, Rockstar Cows and Aspire Jerseys.

“We didn’t have any expectations but we’re ecstatic with that price,” Daniel Bacon said.

“The overall sale was good for the breed and it was good to see a few Holstein breeders getting into the market.”

The top price cow was bought by Declan Patten on behalf of Melbourne-based thoroughbred breeders looking to move into dairy cattle.

“She’s the highest-priced Australian-bred Jersey heifer of all time which gives an indication of her quality,” he said.

“She ticks a lot of boxes and she will be a great investment.

“The investors see there are great opportunities in agriculture and Jerseys are at the forefront of that in the dairy industry.”

Second top price of $13,500 was achieved by Araluen Park and Stonyrun Jerseys with a pick of the herd offer.

Vendors Trevor Saunders and Anthea Day said they were pleased with the result.

“We’re incredibly happy with the result,” Mr Saunders said.

“It was a bit of a gamble to do it this way, but we would have been happy with anything over $10,000.”

“Overall, the sale was amazing.”

The conference will finish on Thursday at the Mercure Warragul with the Jersey Australia annual general meeting.

Buyers flock to rare sale of Jessica bloodline at Elmar Holsteins

The sale of Lot 3 took only seconds to reach the $25,000 mark.

When auctioneer crier Nick Flanagan got to $40,000 the crowd started talking, and onlookers shook their heads in amazement as an online bidder and a farmer in the front row continued to push the price higher.

In the end it was the front row farmers — Les and Louise Calder of Calderlea Stud — who got the three-year-old Holstein cow Elmar Solomon Jessica 7 for a tear-jerking $46,500.

The April 22 Elmar Holstein auction in Leitchville was a royal show in its own right with bunting, sawdust, “hairspray” and four-legged show ring legends making guest appearances.

Elmar Holsteins created their own show pavilion for the auction.

Stud principals Steve and Deanne Hore said the family hadn’t held a fully-fledged auction since the 1980s, with the past 40 or so years dedicated to building up their world-famous Jessica bloodline.

Mr Hore said the sale was unreal.

“It’s probably the highest single vendor sale in Australian history. That average lot price of $10,492 is pretty special to have.”

Elmar Holsteins.

Regarding their $46,500 cow, Mr Hore simply said “she deserves it”.

“She was the most complete cow there, has high profitability, is in calf to sexed semen and is maximum classification for her age,” he said.

“The Calders may or may not show her at Dairy Week, they haven’t said, but they will be using her to start their own Jessica line.”

Lot 3 is the daughter of IDW 2018 Supreme Exhibit Jessica 11 and great-granddaughter of Reserve All World Cow 2004 Leader Jessica.

The beauty of a $46,500 cow – complete with heifer calf in utero. Elmar Solomon Jessica 7 is a daughter of IDW 2018 Supreme Exhibit Jessica 11 and great-granddaughter of Reserve All World Cow 2004 Leader Jessica.

The 65-lot auction reaped $673,400 in total.

“Now we are going to sit and relax for a bit before getting a couple of barns finished. The money from his sale is going to be going towards infrastructure on the farm,” Mr Hore said.

Those present were either excited to watch the spectacle or grim in the knowledge they were going to be the ones bidding.

Ben Govett and Lot 5 with the Flanagan auctioneer team above.

Glomar Holsteins’ Robert and Lynette Johnston drove five-and-a-half hours from Sale to attend the auction.

“This is a really good showing and the cows are presenting very well,” Mrs Johnston said.

“We will be bidding. We’re interested in getting some different pedigrees and show ring material.”

Lynette and Robert Johnston from Glomar Holsteins drove from Sale to bid at the auction.

Stewart family farm workers Ruby Meston and Mat Dennis came to window-shop alongside farm kid Jed Stewart.

“Jed has his list of dream cows,” Mr Dennis said.

“He’s got his eye on the one red calf up for auction right at the end.”

Mr Dennis and Miss Meston said it was great to see such high quality cattle.

Jed Stuart and Ruby Meston from Yarrawalla.

Stu Mackie is an old friend of the Hores and had left Gippsland at 4.30 am that morning to make the auction.

“I’m here to support the family, I’ve known Steve a long time,” Mr Mackie said.

“Everyone is here to try and buy a Jessica. Essentially, now is your only chance.”

Girgarre dairy farmer Pat Nicolson is a Jersey man, but said the Holsteins were impressive. Stu Mackie said everyone was there to see, and maybe buy a piece of, the Jessica pedigree.

New Zealand operation ready to share

The Fullerton family includes (L-R) Alex, David, Pip and Dean. Alex is holding Waipiri Crh Freaky Girl-ET, a Crushabull daughter, out of Lingle Gold Freaky Girl EX93 – the 2016 WDE Intermediate Champion. She will be offered as a pick-of-the-pair with her full sister (both class winners) at this year’s Waikato Show. Dean is holding Waipiri Moovin Saffi, the first Moovin daughter to sell in New Zealand; Moovin Saffi goes back to an Elevation daughter in the USA. A changing of the guard within New Zealand’s Holstein fraternity has created a special opportunity for breeders.

The 300ha grade-one soils at Ngahinapouri have been in the Fullerton family since 1903.

On June 17, Waipiri Holsteins, owned by David and Pip Fullerton and their sons Dean and Alex, will auction 80of their best animals, along with some Ayrshires and invitational lots from friends and colleagues at Ferdon Genetics. Having been in the Fullerton family since 1903, the 300ha grade-one soils at Ngahinapouri are home to 650 cows, which are milked through a freshly commissioned De Laval 50-bale rotary dairy.

In the past decade, Waipiri has consistently pushed through a 10,000-litre average, been the highest-yielding herd in New Zealand four times, and its show cows have consistently cut a swathe through the country. Waipiri has won the National Progeny Competition 11 times (where five daughters from one sire are judged on conformation and production) – including five times with Oman daughters.

Waipiri Holsteins last tested the market in 2011, selling 94 head for a $6200 average (including $7900 for 23 in-calf lots). Fast forward to 2021 in a season where milk prices are soaring, Waipiri is also coming off the back of some stellar results with a group of exciting young cows – with a number those individuals committed to the sale.

David Fullerton says he and Pip have made a conscious decision to stand down to allow their sons to assume the mantle at Waipiri. And, with multiple Premier Breeder banners, Semex on-Farm Champions, and solid energy coming out of the Waikato and Stratford shows in the past four years, David said it felt right to market most of their show team.

Dean Fullerton carries a four-goal polo ranking; when able to travel, he spent part of the year playing professionally. Brother Alex is fulltime at Waipiri Holsteins.

“The show efforts have mostly come down to the two boys, and I think it’s time for them to take over the day-to-day running of the breeding programme,” David said. “If we were going out now, it made sense to put up 20 to 25 of the best cows we had if they were calving right.

“While my passion for the genetics is still there, my interest in getting up and physically milking the cows was no longer quite there with me.

“I also realised that I see far too many farmers with hip, knee and shoulder injuries,” David said. “So, I’ve decided to step back, because we have other business interests to keep us out of trouble, and I’m always around and about the farm.”

The big hitters

Waipiri hasn’t hesitated to dip into its own show team for its sale. Mogul Kristy EX-4yrs, the Waikato Holstein and All Breeds Reserve Champion (Holstein and All Breeds Best Udder) will sell in-calf to sexed Moovin. The Mogul’s King Doc sister will also sell.

The star lot in this sale will be Waipiri Mogul Kristy EX-4yrs. She was the winning four-year-old Holstein and All Breeds four-year-old, Reserve Senior Champion and Best Udder (Holstein and All Breeds) at the 2020 Waikato Show. This year she was the winning four-year-old and the highest-pointed cow in the Waikato Semex On-Farm Competition, in addition to the highest-point cow overall. At the Stratford Show she was the winning four-year-old Holstein and All Breeds and Reserve Senior Champion Holstein. Her dam is Waipiri Shottle Kristy EX3 and she’s backed by 11 generations of VG or EX. She’s due in July to sexed Moovin.

Waipiri Oman Liza was one of the Fullerton family’s Oman daughters who featured in Holstein International. Two direct daughters – an EX Doorman and a VG87 Goldwyn – along with many family descendants will sell. Photo: Han Hopman.

Another star lot will be Waipiri Doorman Lilly EX (due to King Doc), backed by an EX2 Oman x VG89 Donor. The Fullertons are also excited about their milking daughters to sell sired by Doorman, Bookem, Solomon, Mogul and Kian. The sires behind the younger heifers in the sale will include Lambda, King Doc, Sidekick and Crushable.

Waipiri Solomon Lakota VG87-2yrs was the 2020 All New Zealand two-year-old and 2019 Champion Holstein at the Waikato Show. A daughter will sell from her by either King Doc or Moovin.

“I didn’t think in the Holstein breed that we’d get two bulls like King Doc and Lambda working in tandem that would give you such a great production, with such unbelievable udder traits and pedigree. King Doc is red-hot right now, and as a breed we are all lucky to have him. There will be about 10 of his daughters go through the ring.”

North America is well represented in Waipiri’s June 17 sale, with the pick of show-winning daughters sired by Crushabull selling from the 2016 World Dairy Expo Intermediate Champion, Lingle Gold Freaky Girl EX93.

Runs on the board and everything in front of them

Waipiri Farms is in some of the best horse country New Zealand has to offer.

David said the young cows were still on the rise, but importantly they already have runs on the board, making them ripe for the picking.

“This sale will give people the opportunity to come and get into those sort of young show cows that all have their future in front of them.

“We’ve got high-genomic cows, global-impact female families, and they are all backed by solid productions over multiple generations.

“This sale is really about the modern Holstein and strong female families, like the Roxys, the Frostys, the Apples, and descendants from the Pen-Col ‘D’ family [Pennsylvania, USA], which has been successful in every country around the world.

“Then we’ve got some of these new cow families with extreme genomics, some descending down from the Delilas and we have a few new families emerging as well.”

David said that terms will be available, and visitors are welcome to visit by appointment.

International buyers strong at Autumn Harvest Sale

The Autumn Harvest sale gave many of New Zealand’s young breeders the opportunity to be involved.

New Zealand is well and truly on the world map for registered cattle and multi-breed appeal after the Autumn Harvest Sale at the Cambridge Raceway on April 22.

Of the 60 lots, the top price was $12,500, with an average across all breeds of $6013. More than 400 people attended the evening event.

Notably 10% of the sale sold to international buyers from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia.

Sale organiser Dean Malcolm, of Bluechip Marketing, said the result [and the wash-up] proved they had the mix right.

“We had a huge crowd and a lot of buzz, which was extremely positive for the industry,” Dean said. “We had international enquiry before the sale, and to get six sold that way proves to me we had the product people wanted.”

Top price $12,500

Top-priced Ayrshire Kiteroa Cream Burdette, sold for $12,500 to Peter, Heather, and Jamie Baxter, from Tirau. She is pictured [L-R] with her breeder Zane Kite, buyer Jamie Baxter, and sale crew Zoe Botha and Isaac Kelsen.

He said the top price of $12,500 for the Ayrshire which sold at Lot 1, Kiteroa Cream Burdette, gave the sale a strong start. She was bought by Peter, Heather, and Jamie Baxter, from Tirau.

“With that top price and the final average made it a solid sale from start to finish for me.” Dean said. “There was still good buying for people as well.

“I think we broke down the breed barriers a lot for New Zealand in this sale. There was a lot of multi-breed bidding, a lot of young people bidding, and there was also a lot of online interest.

“We had about 150 bids that came through the two online selling platforms, in addition to our livestream video.”

The top Holstein price was paid for lot 6, Pincots Doorman Angel-Imp-ET-EXC. She sold for $11,000 to well-known Jersey breeders, Ferdon Genetics, from Otorohanga.

International buyers add hype

The top-priced Jersey Fynreath Joel Dutchess-Imp-ET sold for $12,000. She was bought by Dean Malcolm (Bluechip Marketing, pictured) and Frank and Diane Borba (United States). Also pictured is handler Nicole Maher and Fynreath Genetics’ Joanna Fowlie.

Frank and Diane Borba, from the United States, paid the second top price overall and the top price in the Jersey offering [$12,000] for Lot 4 – Fynreath Joel Dutchess-Imp-ET, in partnership with Bluechip Marketing. She will continue to be housed with her breeders at Fynreath Genetics.

“Frank and Diane are one of the biggest names in the world for registered cattle, and they are one of the most exciting buyers you can get,” Dean said.

The sole Milking Shorthorn to sell, Westell Supreme Abbie, sold for $4500 to Julie and Brian Pirie, from Thames.

The top Brown Swiss lot was lot 35, Topline Cadence Siena, offered by Topline Genetics. She was bought by Susie Woodward, of Woodward Farms, Otorohanga.

The top-priced embryo package, which was offered by Australian Declan Patten, included five Peak Jagger embryos from Murribrook Doorman Candace EX93. They sold for $1900 per embryo [$9500] to Bellbrook Farming’s Robbie Wakelin, in Canterbury.

The balance of the international buyers included Paul and Vicki Timbs, from NSW. They bought Ayrshire Glenalla Kingsire Delilah at Lot 3 for $6000. Delilah will continue to reside at her breeders, Glenalla and Snowfed Farms, at Ashburton, in Canterbury. The Jaspers Brush couple also bought Lot 25, an Ayrshire embryo package, which was offered by fellow Australian Munden Farms.

Lot 13, Arran Vitali Gracie, was bought for $5000 by UK Syndicate “The 3 Amigos”, which includes Alan Timbrell, Blaise Tomlinson and Lisa Window-Walker. Another UK buyer, Simon Gaskin, bought lot 53, Ferdon Chrom Brighteyes for $5250. She will be managed by Ferdon Genetics on behalf of her buyer.

A UK buyer bought Lot 30 – which included five embryos offered by a New Zealand couple who are now living in the UK – Brent and Ann Crothers, of Toi Toi Genetics. The embryo package – sired by sexed Sidekick from Knowlesmere Crush Diamond – sold to Robert Cowgill, of Lancashire.

An Australian buyer, Brett Hayter, was the last man standing on Lot 36, which was a package of five Brown Swiss embryos offered by arguably Australia’s most successful Swiss breeder, Tandara Farms. The OMalley embryos from Tandara Etvie Heidi sold for $1600 per embryo [$8000].

Finish on a high

Dean said it was pleasing to see the final live lot Tahora Pharo Lorraine, make $8500 for her sellers, Tahora Farms, from Tai Tapu, Canterbury.

“Duncan [Pipe, fellow sale organiser] and I put a fair bit of thought into the structure of the sale and what comprised the top 10 lots, what was mid-range, and what lots were going to finish,” Dean said.

“It was great to end on a great price, because that was a bit of the plan all the way through. It made sense to finish with Tahora because they have such a great name, and an extremely loyal following. So, we knew people would support that last lot, and that’s what happened.

“All our sale crew did a really nice job, and I was proud of the animals when they hit the ring. It helped that the vendors had done a nice job on-farm, and hopefully we finished it off for them.

“Everyone has been asking if we’d do one next year. But, my feeling at the moment is that this sort of sale is a biannual thing, if you want to sustain it long-term. We can’t thank everyone enough for their interest and support.”

Averages by breed:

Holstein: $6338

Jersey: $5571

Ayrshire: $6062

Brown Swiss: $4312

But more than just the sale there many touching moments including this special message that Brianne shares here :
Yesterday on the buyers list I mentioned there would be a special announcement today. I received a lot of compliments on my sale posts this week but nothing I say here is going to do justice to the incredible act of generosity bestowed upon our family after the sale. I will try to keep this short but the emotions are strong here so bear with me!!!!!! A friend I grew up with in 4H back when I lived in Dufferin County reached out yesterday out of the blue. You could say we had lost touch over the years but is that really ever the case with facebook and social media these days? Dwayne asked us to have Chase pick from two of the remaining summer yearlings in the sale and asked that we put her in Chase’s name with Jersey Canada. As you will see in the video Chase chose Beslea Fizz Alligator…..here’s the kicker…….and the tears have started…..again……the purchase price of Alligator, $2000.00, has been donated to the Ontario Autism Coalition and Chase gets to keep Alligator. Thank you doesn’t seem sufficient. There are no words big enough. From the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU!!!

Successful premier of Top Genetic Online Sale

During the present lockdown situation OHG could not issue the traditional International Black & White Days in the Halle Gartlage. Instead of that was for first time an online sale of top genetic animals organized. Beside the printed regular sales catalogue the interested buyers were provided a few days ahead of the sale with videos of all animals selected for the sale to get an impression of them as actual as possible. The feedback on this year sales collection was very positive and so particularly the genomic heifers created a lot of interest, that resulted in embryo contracts either by private breeders or breed organizations. During the last 3 days before the sale and even in the hours just before the start on Saturday 1 pm more and more potential buyers registered to participate actively with bidding. Many animals had already reasonable offers during the pre-bidding period, but then in the final live online sale the potential buyers could make their bid as long as nobody else made an increased offer within 60 seconds.

Sales average more than 1000 Euro above last years TGA

The final result of the sale came up to an average of 7.155 € for the 29 lot sold. This is one of the most successful Top Genetic Auctions (TGA) ever and exceeded the last years result by more than 1.000 €/lot sold. In the beginning were offered 6 impressive milking heifers, that all exhibit deep pedigrees and good first production test days and most of them already VG-85 or VG-86 classifications. The highest price out of the group milking heifers reached Lot No. 2, a Benz out of the Krull Broker Elegance family offered by Uwe Reinermann. She sold for 5.200 Euro to a dairy herd in the north of Lower Saxony.

For type enthusiasts were 8 lots of show-type heifers out of international well-known cow families in this year collection as well. Most attention and so highest price in this category with 4.600 € was captured by a King Doc out of Yorick’s EX-91 full-sister. This black beauty by the name Black Rose will stay in the Osnabrueck area.

Early Lindy-daughter became top seller with 40.000 Euro

The biggest proportion of top genetic heifers were highly genomic tested heifers. This year collection came up to an unbeaten total average of 160 gRZG. The by fare highest tested heifer, WKM Never Reached, was added to the sale just 3 weeks before. With values of 3000 gRZ€ and 171 gRZG she is so far the second highest heifer ever tested in the German system. She is an early daughter of the OHG genomic bull Lindy out of WKM Padawan Norway and offers really spectacular deviations between pedigree and direct genomics of 34 points. So it was no surprise, that this heifer became the top seller and she went finally for 40.000 € to a breeder in Bavaria. The second highest seller, a 164 gRZG VH Crown out of a recently GP-84 classified Rio was offered by Daniel Grünebaum. This heifer by the name Rock’N’Roll created lots of embryo interests and traces back as well to the Rudy Missy cow family. After several minutes bidding finally a breeder herd in the neighborhood area (Emsland) took her home with a bid of 13.500 €.

The third highest seller was a polled Lupo PP tracing back to the Elisa family of Reinermanns. This stylish and very nice developed heifer by the name HGH Elderflower P was purchased by young breeder from the Osnabrück area for 10.600 €.

OHG likes to thanks the many people involved in organizing this sale. Besides providing the appropriate tools and technology we also like to thank our sponsors, who helped to keep the fee structure at the regular attractive level as before. Finally we wish all buyers and investors in Osnabrück genetics lot of success with the animal that they purchased in this first pure online sale.

Diamonds Sparkle at Knowlesmere Dispersal

They say that “Diamonds Are Forever” and there were certainly plenty of Holstein breeders keen to acquire a member of this outstanding cow family when Andrew & Jane Whittaker dispersed their prizewinning Knowlesmere herd at Weston-under Redcastle, Shropshire on September 3rd.

The two top prices were members of this tremendous family and both were purchased by James McNeil from Caiirnpat Holsteins at Stranraer, who has acquired many of the best animals to be sold at auction in recent years. He firstly gave 18,000gs for the superb Knowlesmere Solomon Diamond (Ex-93) who has been an All Britain winner for the past 3 years in succession. Milking with her third calf, her heifer calf at foot by Crushabull made 9,000gs to local breeder Brent Crothers, buying for his Tottoi herd. Solomon Diamond’s dam was the great matron Knowlesmere Jordan Diamond (Ex- 96), a prolific Champion at major shows and former All Britain Mature Cow, and her granddaughter, the much admired calved heifer Knowlesmere Sol Diamond (VG-88) later in the sale sparked another tense bidding battle between Mr McNeil and Steven Robinson from Northern Ireland, bidding on the telephone, before the former prevailed at 20,000gs. The Diamonds sparked interest whenever one entered the ring and the 24 Diamond lots averaged £5,228.

Andrew and Jane’s daughter Izzy and her husband Gary Jones have had their own cattle registered under the Jones prefix, and as they are about to relocate to Ireland, these were part of the dispersal sale. The six month old Jones Awesome Jelly ET, was the subject of great interest, being the first daughter from the renowned prizewinning Knonaudale Jasmine to sell in the UK, and she made 13,500gs to the Forsyth family’s Baltier Farms, bidding online from their Wigtownshire base. Another fancy calf was Jones Firstlook Lexi Red, a member of the famous Blackrose family, and Claire Swale had to go to 11,200gs to acquire her on behalf of Hautmont Hill Holsteins from Belgium.

The Poppi family are always in demand in the auction ring and Iwan Morgan purchased the VG-87 point 2 year old by Stantons High Octane for 12,000gs for his partnership with Elite Haven Holsteins. Anither popular family were the Chancels, with representatives making 8,200, 7,800 and 6,000gs.

30 animals were sold for 4,000gs or more and a further 29 over 3,000gs, paying testimony to the rremendous quality on offer and the Whittaker family are to be congratulated on a wonderful offering of top class Holsteins, resulting in an average of almost £2,400 per life for 322 head from senior cows to baby calves only a few days old.

This was the first online sale conducted by Norton & Brooksbank in their link with MartEye and 19.2% of buyers purchased online, with a total of 246 people bidding online during the day and more than 3,700 people in 9 countries following the sale on live stream.

New Record Average Set for National Heifer Sale

The record for high average in history for the National Heifer Sale was broken for the third consecutive year on June 26, 2020, as 16 lots were struck off for an average of $10,996.88. The average was bolstered by the auction of four high-genomic heifers that sold for more than $20,000 each.

The high seller, AJ Chief 4611 sold for $42,000 to Sexing Technologies of Navasota, Texas. She was consigned by Allen E. Albright and Family of Willard, Ohio.

It was with faith that consignors stepped up to the plate for this year’s National Heifer Sale. Though the live annual meetings held in conjunction with the sale had been cancelled and businesses were taking baby steps to reopen post-quarantine, the sale manager, Jersey Marketing Service (JMS) forged ahead, optimistic Jersey breeders would come through for their premier event to fund youth programs. They did just that in spades. Conducted entirely online through JerseyAuctionLive.com, the average for the 63rd sale of the series beat the historical high average posted last year by nearly $700.

This year’s sale also gives validity to the phrase: the best things―Registered Jerseys, in this case―come in small packages. Though lot quantity was small, quality was big. Selling in the group were three of the breed’s top 100 heifers for Genomic Jersey Performance Index (GJPI) and several others ranked on the top genetic lists. Many tested A2A2 for beta casein. All were genotyped and backed by deep pedigrees.

It was the breed’s #21 heifer for GJPI that garnered the high price of the day. AJ Chief 4611, a four-month-old daughter of JX River Valley Chief {6}-ET, ranks #24 among all genotyped females today with an index of +153. She has GPTAs of +1,252M, +62F (+0.01%) and +50P (+0.02%) and is +562 for CM$.

Jer-Z-Boyz Chief 70930-Twin, a paternal sister to the high seller, sold for the second-high price of $36,000 to 2017 Master Breeder, David Allen of Reedsburg, Wis. Allen purchased the eight-month-old “Chief {6}” daughter consigned by Jer-Z-Boyz of Pixley, Calif. She ranked #76 among genotyped heifers on sale day and today ranks #136 among all genotyped females with a GJPI of +142. She has GPTAs of +641M, +59F (+0.13%) and +40P (+0.08%) and is +1.4 for Type, +1.1 for Cow Conception Rate (CCR) and +1.5 for Heifer Conception Rate (HCR).

The third heifer to rank among the top 100 heifers for GJPI on sale day, Four J Altamontra 19154-ET, was the third high-seller at $28,000. The three-month-old daughter of JX Peak Altamontra {6}-ET was consigned by Four J Jerseys, Tipton, Calif., and purchased by Bos Dairy LLC, Lovington, N.M. She currently ranks #91 among genotyped females with a GJPI of +145. She has GPTAs of +907M, +39F and +43P. She is +2.0 for CCR, +3.5 for HCR and +5.4 for Productive Life.

Her dam, Four J Change Up 13721 {6}, was the fourth high seller of the 2019 National Heifer Sale, purchased for $18,000 by Select Sires Inc., Plain City, Ohio. The Very Good-83% daughter of River Valley Char Change Up-ET ranks on the top genetic lists with a GJPI of +126.

Bringing the fourth high price of $21,000 was TOG Ruby 38565-ET, purchased by Sexing Technologies and consigned by Trans-Ova Genetics of Sioux Center, Iowa. Several generations of the cow family rank for genetic merit and can be traced to the “Tiffany” cow family developed by Ahlem Farms Partnership of Hilmar, Calif.

“Ruby 38565” is a high component daughter of CDF Irwin Steve. The four-month-old heifer calf ranks on the list of the Top 500 Females for GJPI with an index of +137. She has GPTAs of +37M, +73F (+0.33%) and +29P (+0.13%).

Her dam, sired by ISDK VJ Hjortvangs Holmer Hjort, and her grandam, sired by TOG Altablitz-ET, both rank among the top 1.5% for genetic merit.

In all, 14 buyers from nine states made purchases. Sexing Technologies was the volume buyer, with three head for $68,300. Bos Dairy LLC was the final bidder on five lots for a total $39,650.

Other Activities

Items were also auctioned to raise funds for the AJCC Research Foundation and youth activities. Legacy bull semen donated by Cedarcrest Farms, Faunsdale, Ala., generated $1,995 from the sale of units or ampules from Belles Expo-ET, Lester Sambo, Milestones Generator and Sooner Centurion-ET.

A pair of face masks with “The Jersey” by Bonnie Mohr were purchased by National All-Jersey Inc. President John Kokoski of Hadley, Mass. A basket representing Oregon agriculture was purchased by American Jersey Cattle Association Director John Boer and his family of Dalhart, Texas. The basket had been donated by the reigning National Jersey Queen, Gracie Krahn, who hails from Oregon. The two items contributed another $475 for the foundation and youth programs.

The sale was cried by Chris Hill for the seventh time and conducted virtually in the Embassy Suites hotel in Columbus, Ohio, by JMS through JerseyAuctionLive.com. Pre-recorded vidoes of lots were promoted on social media in the weeks leading to the sale and shown live during the event.

Beyond Buyers and Sellers

Since 1958, the National Heifer Sale has been the single largest contributor to national youth development activities of the American Jersey Cattle Association. It is standard for each consignor to donate a portion of the animal’s selling price to the fund. This year, $17,595 will be contributed in support of the National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest and the National Jersey Youth Production Contest, to fund travel for Young Jersey Breeder Award recipients to annual meetings and to sponsor other youth activities throughout the year.

The American Jersey Cattle Association, organized in 1868, compiles and maintains animal identification and performance data on Jersey cattle and provides services that support genetic improvement and greater profitability. Since 1957, National All-Jersey Inc. has provided services that increase the value of and demand for Jersey milk and milk products and Registered Jersey™ cattle and genetics.

RZH SIE SEATTLE sold for €50.000 at 29th RUW Highlight sale

Seattle from Marco Hellwig & Stefan Siepermann, sold for €50.000.

There was a lot of enthousiasm for the 47 lotnumbers at the HighlightSale last Friday in Hamm, Germany. From this total of 47 sale heifers 41 were sold for a tremendous average of € 8.066! Salesmasher was RZH SIE Seattle. With such an amazing genomic profile it was already certain before the sale that she would be the topseller this year. But nobody expected that she would be sold for € 50.000. The second highest seller was HET Charlene (Soundcloud-Sound System) at €29,000. Charlene, who tests well on many total indexes (2743 gTPI/400 gNVI/160 gRZG), comes from a cow family that needs little introduction: the Cosmopolitans. The sale averaged €8,066.

The prices at this sale were amazing. Two GenHotel members, Hof Am Sylvert and Wilder Holsteins, both striked to get the best animals. They paid the highest and second highest price during this sale.
