Mention polled to dairy cattle breeders and you can get differing reactions – ‘Yes, it’s the future’, ‘No, it’s just a fad and it will die out’ or Maybe? The majority are on the fence waiting to see if breeding for polled does catch on.
Let’s work through the factors breeders face when considering the incorporation of polled into their breeding programs.
Who Decides?
Let’s start off with who should decide whether polled sires should be used in a herd.
There are many groups with many opinions. They range from breeding companies that do not have polled genetics in their product line-up to breeding companies that have invested in developing polled sires and females. As well the question is raised by consumers. They want to know if the animals in the herds that their milk comes from suffered if they are born horned and then are dehorned.
The Bulllvine is of the opinion that it is the breeders that should decide. They are the ones who make the investment of time, energy and resources.
Significant Catch-Up by Polled
Until about five years ago the vast majority of dairy cattle breeders paid no attention to polled. Globally few breeders breed for polled, and they regarded it to be the primary trait. They paid limited attention to selection for type and minor attention for production. Then things changed.

Table 1 shows that in 2011 polled Holstein bulls trailed their horned contemporaries by 555 LPI points. However, in 2015, that difference is now reduced to 271 LPI points. In large part that reduction has come about because bull breeders have bred their very best females to the top polled sires or the best polled females have been bred to elite indexing sires. Furthermore, the number of polled bulls with high indexes has increased significantly.
Other take-home messages from Table 1 include:
Top horned bulls improved by 91 LPI points per year from 2011 to 2015 while top polled bulls improved by 162 LPI points per year. The rate for polled is 178% of that for horned.
Top polled bulls started at a low Pro$ level in 2012 and have increased by 256 Pro$ points per year. The rate of improvement for Pro$ for polled bulls was 165% of that for horned bulls.
Within another 3-5 years, top polled sires will be almost on par with their horned contemporaries.
Why have some breeders bought into polled?
The list is likely long but include:
Dislike the task of dehorning
Want to eliminate calf stress
Concern about the industry’s image in the consumers’ eyes
Already have high genetic levels in their herd for economically important traits
Want to increase their breeding stock marketing opportunities
Why are many breeders choosing to wait to use polled?
Those reasons given include:
Genetic levels of polled animals are inferior to horned
Do not see polled ever being mainstream
Staff at dehorning time dehorn everything – polled or not.
Cannot see a financial benefit for polled
What about Current genetic levels?

Tables 2 and 3 contain some interesting facts:
Daughter proven polled sires are significantly behind horned in the USA and Canada for all of TPI, LPI, NM$ and Pro$ (Table 2).
For genomic evaluated bulls born in 2014 (Table 3) the TPI and LPI averages for top sires, horned and polled, are considerably closer than for daughter proven sires (Table 2). Polled are 90% of horned.
Polled will be while a catching horned for NM$ and Pro$ as the top genomic sires are only 67% and 80% respectively of their horned year mates.
What would make it easier to universally adopt polled?
In an ideal world the following could help:
If there were 3-5 very high (2600+ gTPI, 3300+ gLPI, 800+ NM$ or 2400+ Pro$) indexing PP sires
If there were high indexing PP sires that also have low (< 7%) future inbreeding coefficients
If gene editing was a reality and polled could be a reality for any or all embryos
For which breeders can polled be a fit?
Breeders with a program that:
Group houses pre-weaned calves
Entirely selects sires using genomic indexes
Continually evaluates and adopts the next innovative step
Supports the expansion of dairy’s market share of the food dollar
The Bullvine Bottom Line
The decision whether to use polled sires cannot be set in stone. Considerable progress has been made in the genetic level of polled Holsteins. Within five years polled will be equal genetically to horned for the majority of economically important traits. Since quick ways to change the gene from horned to polled in an embryo are still likely some time off, the decision on the value of having polled animals still rests in breeder’s hands.
Our recent article on the relative merit of polled (Holstein) dairy cattle may not have garnered the attention of many breeders. (Read more: Polled Dairy Genetics: The Cold Hard Facts) But for those that are seeing the consumer writing on the wall and foresee the need to genetically take the horns off cattle, we wish to document what’s hot in polled. Before considering the lists, we strongly suggest that you reflect on two things: 1) how you plan to generate revenue from the genetics in your herd; and 2) how you plan to decrease costs from using sires. (Read more: What’s The Plan?) The breeding business has changed (Read more: Where did the money go?) As you confirm adding polled to your sire selection criteria it is an excellent time to decide which index will be your primary one.
Decide. Don’t Ride the Fence.
Nothing’s perfect. That applies to which total merit index to use just as it does to the fact that there are no perfect bulls. However defaulting to using the bull your neighbour uses or the one that the semen salesman is promoting (Read more: Rumors, Lies, and other stuff Salesmen will tell you) is avoiding some very important planning for your herd. The financial future of your farm depends on using the index that will meet your needs five to ten years in the future. It is never too soon to plan for YOUR future.
Select an Index and Stick to It
Every major dairy cattle breeding country publishes a total merit index (Read more: Total Merit Indexes: Are they helping or hurting?). The bull listings below are broken out by various indexes and bull groupings. This is a two stage process. Pick your index then pick your bull(s). I remind you that the Bullvine strongly recommends that, when using genomic bulls that you do use more than one or two bulls in order to spread risk. If you are looking to win in the show ring, we leave the formula you use up to you. Likely you will use PTAT or CONF as your primary selection criteria.
If You`re Undecided
If you are not certain on which index to use, The Bullvine recommends that for breeders who’s primary income is the milk check, you use NM$ or BEI.

For Net Merit ($) polled bulls are still far behind the 900+ values being seen today by horned bulls. That will change 3-4 years after breeders and breeding companies that use NMS as their primary index begin to place emphasis on having polled cattle. Compared to the gTPI™ list there is some re-ranking of the bulls at the top for Net Merit. In other words, there is not perfect bull.

For information on BEI follow this link (Read more: 30 Sires that will produce Feed Efficient Cows). Between the top three bulls in Table 4 there is little difference when it comes to siring feed efficient cows. A s with Net merit (Table 3) bulls come to the top for BEI when they are rated for their daughters being moderate in stature and body depth, fertile, have moderate depth of udder, are able to resist mastitis, are able to calve in without difficulty (DCE or DCA) and have a long herd life.

Please note that not all polled sires are identified on the CDN system
The information in table 5 came from the CDN files (Most listings do not separate out PP bulls.) The only sure way to have all progeny born polled is to use PP bulls. That will limited the total genetic merit of your herd but it will get you to a polled herd more quickly.
Lowering Inbreeding
For breeders using polled sires and interested in lowering the inbreeding level in their herd, we provide a list of bulls that are below average for their inbreeding level (the number in the brackets is their Inbreeding %): Man P (2.73%); Magna P (3.88%); Illegal P (4.46%); Trey PP (4.58%); Snowball P (4.67%); Colt P (5.20%); Earnhardt P (5.78%); and Terrel PP (6.01%).
The Bullvine Bottom Line
The great news is – there is more choice and increased genetic merit than ever before in polled Holstein sires. As we reported previously, polled animals have made significant gains in the last five years when it comes to their total merit indexes relative to horned animals. The Bullvine recommends that breeders include at least three polled sire in the group of sires that they are currently using. In five years you will pat yourself on the back and say ‘Good Decision’. Discerning consumers of milk products want to know that the milk products that they buy come from animals that are humanely cared for.
Not sure what all this hype about genomics is all about?
Want to learn what it is and what it means to your breeding program?
The fact is that polled has not come to the front page for Holstein and Jersey organizations. As recently as 2012 we could not find published percentages of registrations that there were for polled animals. Perhaps in a couple of months, when the 2013 statistics are published, we may get some stats on polled.
What is Getting Tracked?
We do know that Red and White animals represent about 5% of the Holsteins in North America. However the current thinking appears to be that polled should be even more of a consideration than coat color (Read more: Is Polled the New Red). In case you are wondering, here are some other 2012 facts about Canadian dairy cattle as published by CDN: 5% are from ET; 90.6 % are from A.I. sires; 94.3% are Holsteins; and 3.5% of Holsteins registered were genomically tested. In addition to those stats it would be very interesting to break down polled registrations in the same way.
Where in the World are Polled Animals?
Going beyond North America we found that 50% of Norwegian Red (NRF) calves born in Norway are polled. Nowhere else appears to match that prevalence. Yet there is a naturally 100% polled breed in the UK called Red Polled Cattle. It is a dual milk and meat breed but it is not popular in large intensively managed dairy herds. As well some Jersey breeders are advertising that they are developing polled herds. Two such herds are Dutch Hollow in New York State and Ardachie Polled Jerseys in New Zealand. Of course Holstein breeders will be familiar with the famous polled cow, Golden-Oaks Perk Rae-Red-ET PO EX90 (Read more: GOLDEN-OAKS PERK RAE – 2012 Golden Dam Finalist), a finalist in the The Bullvine’s Golden Dam Competition. She traces back to the Queen of the Breed, Glenridge Citation Roxy EX97.
Is Polled Genetically Competitive?
For decades polled in Holsteins has remained very much on the back burner for breeders because, in general, polled animals were well below average for their total genetic merit and were selected mainly for the presence of the polled gene. A study of the top ten (gLPI) polled males and females born in North America, 2009 to 2013, paints a revised picture for the progress being made by polled animals.

**** All LPI values are reproted using the 2013 base
The total merit of top polled Holsteins has made significant progress in recent years. In 2009 the top ten polled animals were, on average, 700 – 800 LPI points behind their horned counter parts. However just four years later, in 2013, the difference was only 400 – 450 LPI points. Top polled animals increased by 175 to 200 LPI points year over year while top horned animals were increasing by 110 LPI points. In percentage terms top polled outdid top horned by 60% – 80%. It should be noted that these gains were made by breeders using genomic indexes and selecting very elite animals as the parents to produce polled progeny. Great results!
Top Polled or Horned –What’s the Difference?
The following table compares values for top polled and top horned animals for gLPI and its components (Production, Durability and Health & Fertility).

* gLPI = 51% Production + 34% Durability + 15% Health & Fertility
** %RK calculated using the 2013 Canadian Holstein Bulls and Cow Percentile Rank Tables
*** LPI values are reported using the 2013 base
On percentile rank top polled Holsteins compare very well with top horned Holsteins. Note that for Health and Fertility the top polled animals are slightly ahead of horned males and females. The area where top polled Holsteins have some catching up yet to do is in production, primarily in the volumes of fat and protein produced.
What Route will you take on the Polled Road?
Two routes have been taken by North American Holstein breeders to get the top ten polled males and females born in 2012 and 2013. Those routes yield heterozygous polled progeny and they are: i) breed a polled female, of relatively high total merit, to a very high genomically tested horn male; or ii) use the highest genomically tested polled bull available on a very high genomically tested horned female. As it turns out exactly half of the males and half of the females came from each route. For these top twenty polled animals the sires used on the polled females were Supersire, Uno, AltaOak and McCutchen and in all cases the polled sire was Da-So-Burn MOM Earnhardt-P (Man-O-Man x Shamrock x Shottle). Either route was equally effective.
Matters to Consider
Breeders, who are ready to incorporate the dominant polled gene into their Holsteins, should consider the following:
Inbreeding – no matter horned or polled if a mating will result in an Inbreeding Percentage over 7-8% then serious thought needs to be given to selecting an alternate sire. On the polled side breeders often mention avoiding LawnBoy but just as serious is the fact that Shottle, Oman, Planet, Goldwyn, Bolton, … dominate Holstein pedigrees.
Only when homozygous (PP) polled sires are used will all progeny be polled. At the current time, the very best PP sires are only 2000 gTPI or 2500 gLPI, so they are still quite a distance behind the breed leaders. Expect the merit of PP sires, relative to P or horned sires, to change in the next 4-5 years.
Buyers are paying a premium for polled males or females or embryos from polled parents.
The Bullvine Bottom Line
The incorporation of the dominant polled gene into the Holstein breed has moved from the fringe or a fad to being a topic every breeder must be aware of. All breeders need to seriously search out and start using polled bulls that are 2300+ gTPI or 3000+ gLPI. (Watch for a future article on The Bullvine that will address which polled sires to use) It is not about changing for the sake of change. It is about being mainstream. Polled is here to stay.
Until recently, if you were talking about polled dairy genetics you were talking about a minor portion of the breeding population. However, modern dairy genetics has seen dramatic changes in that situation. The rising popularity of polled has been propelled in part by activists, consumers and breeders all of whom are seeking better ways to provide healthy products to the marketplace in an efficient, profitable and sustainable manner. Polled is a proactive opportunity to solve issues and meet needs in one genetic swoop.
Polled Pioneers Past and Present
Polled pioneer breeders have been few and far between. Thirty-nine years ago Burkett Falls Farm (Father Dave & Son John Burket, East Freedom, Pennsylvania, USA) had an Elevation daughter born, Sophie EX93, from which the majority of today’s polled Holsteins trace. The desire of breeders to have polled Holsteins until now has remained just that, a desire. Some polled bulls have entered AI but except for Aggravation Lawn Boy P-Red (born in 2002) few have gained much attention. Perhaps two reasons for that are that polled may have been associated with breeder proven bulls, known for unreliable single herd proofs, and a frequent association between polled and Red & White, which in North America represents only about 5% of the Holstein population.
Aggravation Lawn Boy P-Red (EX-93-GM)
Changing Polled Perceptions
On the one hand, the dominance of the polled trait in beef cattle has given rise to the false impression that polled Holsteins are descendant of a beef background. Today’s DNA testing capabilities answer that concern. However, despite this, the attitude of leading edge breeders is changing. No longer is the approach, stated in 1964 by the then Holstein Canada CEO George M Clemons, ‘we have other more important traits to improve’, in line with current breeders’ thinking. Today, having doubled the 1964 production levels, breeders want to avoid unpleasant work, unnecessary costs and raise a positive animal welfare reputation.
Polling for Dollars
Just last month at the Ri-Val-Re Sale, in Michigan, Bomaz Numero Uno 5904 PC (Numero Uno x Lawn Boy P-Red x Laudan x Garter), the #3 TPI™ polled heifer in the breed at 2365, sold for $(US) 215,0000. (Read more: Ri-Val-Re Select Sale Averages an Outstanding $25,910) Polled has come of age. Not only is Uno 5904 high indexing for fat, protein, mammary systems, productive life, daughter fertility, milking speed and milking temperament but she is also an outcross. In the same sale Ri-Val-Re The Best P-Red, the #1 TPI™ & NM$ female in the breed (Special Effect P-Red x Macguiness x Advent-Red x Ranger x Factor) sold for $(US) 38,000. Again an outcross to Oman, Goldwyn, Shottle, Bolton and Planet. Their buyers obviously have plans. Polled also made the headlines last fall when five doses of semen sold for $50,000 (Read more: $10,000 a dose Polled Semen). It was five doses of semen and the right to exclusivity of use for a few months of the homozygous polled bull Kulp-Dale Golden PP-Red (Colt-P x Goldwyn x Redman x Perk-Red x Rubens).
Ri-Val-Re The Best P-Red, the #1 TPI™ & NM$ female in the breed (Special Effect P-Red x Macguiness x Advent-Red x Ranger x Factor) sold for $(US) 38,000 at the Ri-Val-Re Select Sale.
Going Down the Polled Road
There are two ways to use polled in a herd’s breeding program when it comes to sire selection. One way is to go all out and only use PP bulls. All heifers born will be polled. The limiting factor will be that the heifers will not be as high for gTPI™, gLPI or NM$ as using P bulls (heterozygous for polled)
The alternative method would be to use P bulls. In the first generation half the heifers will be polled and in the second generation 25% will be homozygous polled, 50% will be polled but heterozygous and 25% will be horned. Definitely a slower route but the heifers will be higher indexing than using PP bulls.
More Bulls Are Polled Apart
The rise in polled popularity goes beyond two top selling heifers and five doses of semen. A search of the CDN files of Black & White polled bulls waiting to be old enough to be sampled, shows six bulls born in later 2012 and seven born and registered already in 2013 over +2750 LPI. Two are over +3000 LPI. Note that, on the CDN files, bulls cannot get a gLPI or have a DGV LPI listed until they are one year of age, These thirteen young bulls are the result of breeders breeding their top indexing females to polled bulls. As more and more top gTPI™ and gLPI cows and heifers are flushed to top polled bulls, 2500 gTPI™ young bulls and heifers will only be a short time down the road.
How to Pick Up Speed On the Polled Road
Roy MacGregor of DairyBullsOnline
It is always wise to ask questions and follow advice of the experts in new procedures. shares his insights on where to start when establishing polled genetics in your herd (Read more: They`re Sold On Polled!!). “The first procedure is to check for horn bud. If no bud do not dehorn. If after 3-4 weeks no horn bud develops your animal is likely polled. Another really good indicator is double eyelashes. A smooth head and double eyelashes should mean polled right away. Some calves and especially males can develop small immature buds or scurrs much later at 4-6 months or even older. In this case testing your calf with the German test or the UC Davis test is the best idea to avoid confusion.” He offers this encouragement “
There is a small learning curve but after a breeder gets a couple polled calves he will understand that smooth (like glass smooth) means polled, and it will get easier from there. “
Polled Procedures or “When in doubt, test!”
The test currently used through Holstein is the Igenity test, which we are told is accurate to 95% which is really quite good however we are all aware of the bulls Shine, and Balti being the exception. The most accurate test today is the German or UC Davis test closer to 99.9% or greater. However nothing can be said to be 100% because in genetics natural mutations can, and do occur. It should be noted no polled test can save poor management of mixed up hair samples. Of course, to err is human but when in doubt, test. For Homozygous calves obviously the only way to know is either wait until several offspring are born polled from one horned parent, or test. However in today’s day and age nobody wants to wait so we simply have to trust the best test at our disposal.
Is Polled Suffering from a Bad Code
Firstly the POC code currently in place naturally tends to lead some to believe there are “polled carriers” which only confuses the matter even more. There is no such thing as a “Polled carrier” animals are either polled or horned. Roy MacGregor, offers this opinion. “I think giving a dominate trait a recessive code is the wrong approach. It would be simpler to add P or PP right in the name. Nobody has to go looking for codes. It’s all right there right in the name, and with proper protocol at registration (simple pedigree research) and proper testing (when needed) this could easily be automatic.”
The Polled Learning Curve
For those who have been following some of the questions and concerns, MacGregor provides his viewpoint. “I think A.I’s all over the world have now panicked and realized all polled bulls need to tested at UC Davis, so the initial shock is probably over. However the problem now is what to do with all the females coded as POC on the 95% accurate Igenity test? This whole POC coding adventure has been especially frustrating for those who have been dealing with polled for years. Imagine being told you have to test something for POC that is obviously polled? Would you ask a breeder with a Red calf to test it for *RC? Polled is still fairly new so hopefully over time common sense will prevail, people just need to relax, slow down, and follow step one (check for the horn bud).”
The Bullvine Bottom Line
So, how do you see polled in your breeding program? Is it an opportunity? Is it an annoyance? Is it a necessity? The genetics are rapidly being established that mean there is no sacrifice in genetic merit if you breed for polled dairy cattle. The first choice of public opinion is moving quickly in favor of polled. From the sidelines, to headlines to main line it’s time to ask yourself, “When it comes to polled, what line will I commit to?”
There is no question that the dairy breeding industry is a very passionate group of people. So when breeders jump on the latest bandwagon, many of the old veterans say “it’s just a fad” and laugh at all the “rookies” who waste their time and money on this “meaningless” cause. The funny thing is, if you’re talking about polled, the fad actually does have value. There is both genetic and financial merit to breeding polled. It is these two key factors that have many progressive breeders horny for polled.
Breeders have known about the polled advantage for years and yet they have not endorsed using polled genetics in any significant way. (Read more: Polled Genetics: Way of the future or passing fad? and They’re Sold on Polled!!) While not having to dehorn your calves has economic advantages, many breeders see that job as part of their regular routine and so don’t make getting rid of horns a high priority. They think this way, despite the fact that one mating to a polled sire results in a minimum 50% hornless calves and could be 100%, if the bull is homozygous polled. These are much quicker results than breeding to get a red calf, for instance.
Are you looking ahead or behind?
Even though consumers have not yet cried out for change, that does not mean they won’t in the future. Much like tail docking, once consumers do gain awareness, they are sure to cry foul. When developing your breeding program, it’s not only about supplying the genetics that the market needs today, but also looking to the future. In order to get ahead you need to think about where the market is heading not what has happened in the past (Read more: Marketing Lessons from Glen Drummond Aero Flower). Concerns about animal welfare as well as employee welfare are sure to become more prevalent in the future.
Ms Koenen Ladd P5715-Red PP Gtpi 1936 Homozygous Polled PP Red Roxy! Sells at RI-VAL-RE SELECT SALE, SATURDAY, JUNE 15TH
Are they genetically equal?
Regardless many “old school” breeders have stayed away from breeding polled. Why is that? Well it is probably because, in order to use polled bulls in the past, you had to sacrifice the genetic merit in other traits. That is no longer the case. When you take a closer look at the numbers you realize that the current top 10 proven sires available avg. 2235 GTPI, $654 NM and 2.37 PTAT and the current top 10 Genomic Polled sires available avg. 2198 GTPI $605 NM and 2.58 PTAT. That is only a 2% difference in genetic merit. Even when you compare the top genomic polled sires to non-polled sires, you only see a 13% difference (The current top 10 Genomic sires available avg. 2499 GTPI, $881 NM 2.84 PTAT). Now 13% may sound like a significant difference. But in reality it’s not because our research has shown that bulls within the top 20% of the best sire on the genomic lists all have about an equal chance of topping the list. So the top polled sires are well within this range.
What about inbreeding?
Even though within the current polled bloodlines there are two completely separate crosses that may lead some to believe that they are inbred. The fact is that these bloodlines are pretty much complete outcrosses to Planet, Goldwyn, Shottle and Oman (Read more: 12 Sires to uses in order to reduce inbreeding and Going off the map: 14 outcross Holstein sires that don’t include GPS). Effectively, that means that they are outcrosses to all the bloodlines that most breeders have been using. As a result polled sires become doubly desired. They provide not only the polled advantage but are close to being the top outcross genetics that are available in the market today.
The Bullvine Bottom Line
Those waiting for further proof that breeding polled has merit are the “old school” breeders that are also likely worried about eating green bananas. The problem is, if you wait too long, those bananas are going to turn black. Polled is proven. Don`t wait until it`s too late!
For years, there has been talk about polled genetics and their advantages, but, for the most part, they remain a niche market. This has me asking if polled genetics are like unicorns. Are they living in a fantasy world?
Breeders have known about the advantages for years and yet they have not endorsed using polled genetics in any significant way. While not having to dehorn your calves has economic advantages, many breeders see that job as just part of their routine and so don’t make getting rid of it a high priority. This, despite the fact that , one mating to a polled sire results in a minimum 50% hornless calves and could be 100%, if the bull is homozygous polled. These are much quicker results than breeding to get a red calf, for instance.
Why haven’t breeders adopted polled genetics?
Like any marketplace, producers must meet the demands of the consumer. When consumers wanted hormone free milk, or organic milk, producers followed. Until it becomes a pressing issue to consumers producers will not be forced to change. At this point, despite the fact that organizations such as PETA try their best to make this an issue, it has not gained significant market awareness.
Should breeders care?
Even though consumers have not yet cried out for change, that does not mean they won’t in the future. Much like tail docking, once consumers do gain awareness, they are sure to cry foul. When developing your breeding program, it’s not only about supplying the genetics that the market needs today, but also looking to the future. Similar to breeding for higher feed conversion (to read more check out Holstein vs. Jersey: Which Breed Is More Profitable?), you need to think about where the market is heading. Concerns about animal welfare as well as employee welfare are sure to become more prevalent in the future.
Are there any polled genetics worth using?
For many years, breeding for Red and White Holstein cattle or Polled genetics meant that you had to take a “discount” on the genetics. That was because there just wasn’t the same level of genetics available, when compared to the non-polled options. However, with recent increases in popularity, as well as the ability to get a polled son from a top genomic cow, there are now some great polled genetics available to most breeders. Even the major A.I. companies have started to see the demand and are sourcing polled bulls.
How can you tell if your calf is a polled carrier?
There are no such things as Unicorns or Polled Carriers! Polled is a dominant trait. Simply put, an animal only needs one polled gene for it to be expressed. Animals with horns do not have the polled gene. When the dominant gene is present you will see the trait expressed.
The Bullvine Bottom Line
While polled genetics seem like a niche market, and you`re not sure if it is for your breeding program, you always need to keep an eye on the future. That means not only looking for what potential buyers of your genetics want, but also what future consumers will dictate. . With the growing supply of top genomic polled bulls, as well as the relative ease to achieve a polled calf, it’s becoming harder and harder for breeders to ignore polled Holsteins in their breeding programs.
The next time dehorning rises to the top of your to do list, you might want to think about information provided by Bryan Quanbury and Roy MacGregor of Dairy Bulls Online. They are promoting polled genetics as the solution that saves labour, reduces stress and improves consumer image. What more could you ask when faced with one of the most disliked jobs on the farm?
NO Horns PLEASE! It solves problems on both sides of the fence
Consumers both on and off the farm are concerned with animal welfare issues. Good farmers always seek the best for their livestock. In Europe many details of animal treatment have become legislated. Dairybullsonline states it in easily understood terms. “Any job on your farm that you cannot do in front of a bus load of school children is a job that will not be tolerated in the very near future.” Therefore “Dehorning at conception is the cleanest, easiest, safest, and most humane way to remove horns, and because the polled gene is also a dominant trait it can be bred into existing lines quickly. With polled you see the value 50% of the time on Heterozygous bulls and 100% polled calves with bulls carrying both genes (Homozygous).”
Find Your Niche in this Un-Common Market
For Holstein breeders the market for polled cattle is relatively new, yet the challenge of the small population is a potential opportunity. “The biggest challenge without question has been the small population, however, there are breeders who would argue the rarity or scarcity of polled genetics has been its biggest marketing advantage and provides them with a niche in a crowded marketplace.” There have been many changes in the past five years with the shifting focus toward genomics. Bryan recognizes that “Bulls with genomic potential are selling briskly in the genomics market.” Having said that he notes “The best young genomic bulls are selling out!”
The Market is Hot on Polled
The market is looking closely at polled genetics for several reasons. One, as stated previously, is that animal welfare concerns are growing and the presence and power of social media is demanding transparency in regards to the animal welfare practises on our farms. Polled genetics is a proactive response to this concern. Secondly the potential is huge. Bryan points out, “Less than 1 % of the Holstein population is polled. When you factor in the prices polled females have been bringing lately and take a look at those who have been buying them you can see the market is heating up.” Everyone takes notice when there is market demand and good sale prices coming together. “Ask anyone with a polled female at or near 2000 GTPI what kind of interest they are getting, and they will all tell you everyone is trying to buy them, and the A.I and embryo interest is extreme.” These are all good indicators that the time is right for polled genetics. Roy and Bryan add two more: “Breeders are mating some of the world’s top cows to polled bulls. There is a six month waiting list for the best young genomic heterozygous polled bulls.”
Broad Market Appeal
It is just good business to know where your market is before you jump onto the latest bandwagon. Dairybullsonline see a reassuringly wide response. “All markets have expressed interest from breeders to large scale commercial operations to organic producers and European markets. There are some who are looking for an outcross alternative or for genetics with that little extra edge for embryo and A.I. interests.” Having said that the partners sum up with, “It may actually be easier to ask what markets are not pursuing polled genetics!”
Answer the Tough Questions
At this point, you might be asking yourself, “Why would I use a polled sire that is much lower genomically than non-polled sire?” The DairyBullsOnline team answers, “They are not much lower. In fact they are within one generation. The Genomic predictions on polled bulls are comparable to proven bulls. In December there are 50 Proven bulls over 2000 TPI and there were 9 Polled bulls above 2000 GTPI.” If you need more convincing, they say to consider this, “Genomics has shown polled is within one generation (9 months) of being on an equal playing field with all the top animals. Anyone that breeds their top animals say 2400 GTPI to one of those top genomic Polled bulls can instantly create polled offspring that PA’s around 2200, and the law of averages says half of these will be higher genomically than their PA. Any polled bull this high is extremely marketable. The next generation can be bred back to the very top of the gene pool creating even more marketable polled genetics.”
VENTURE GOLDWYN SOUP P, Dam of #1 & #6 TPI Polled Females
The Time is Right to De-Horn In
If you’re still sitting on the horns of this dilemma, you will be interested in the success stories that Bryan and Roy give as examples. “In 2011 16 polled females from the top of the polled list sold at public auction. They averaged over $35,000 and two polled picks averaged $40,000 At $82,000 the top seller at the 2011 World Classic was a polled female.” If that whets your appetite, here are some more great stats: “The two largest offerings of top Polled animals at auction were at Arron Doon Dispersal 2008. The herd average was $4800. The average of the 12 Polled females was $13000. The Pine-Tree 2011 Sale averaged $11,000 with 14 Polled animals averaging over $15,000.” Everyone in the market place is looking to stand out. Quanbury says, “Anyone with a female at or near 2000 GTPI today knows it’s hard to draw attention, but if you have a polled female that high both A.I and embryo contracts will be coming at you from all directions.” If that makes you want to sharpen your investment pencil, there are obviously many considerations ahead of you.

Polled Genetics is as easy as 1,2,3,4
MacGregor and Quanbury list four guidelines for taking advantage of this market.
Pay attention to who is buying those top polled females. Watch what they are doing.
Use a polled bull on only 10% of your flushes, to create that polled female or male everybody wants.
As top polled females are currently very expensive you may need to partner up and spread your risk.
Start.
BULLVINE BOTTOM LINE
“We know the breed will not be polled in 10 years, but we believe in 10 years bulls that transmit the recessive horn trait will be very hard to market. Today there are about a dozen polled bulls over 2000 GTPI. Next year that will double. We expect that trend to continue for some time.” Bryan Quanbury and Roy MacGregor.
