The final show ribbons and rosettes have been awarded for 2013. Now it’s time to salute the “best of the best” who competed at Canada’s shows this past year by announcing the outstanding animals and groups who have earned a nomination in the Holstein Journal’s 72nd annual All-Canadian Holstein contest.
Charged with the responsibility of narrowing the field of All-Canadian entries down to six nominees in each of the contest’s 21 classes in 2013 was John Buckley, Lindsay, Ont., Donald Dubois, Princeville, Que., Adam Liddle, Argyle, N.Y., and Carl Phoenix, Sunderland, Ont., who comprised our All-Canadian Nominating Committee. These well qualified and experienced judges thoughtfully and thoroughly assessed and discussed the strengths and weaknesses of each entrant’s conformation, show record and picture as they worked to decide who should earn an All-Canadian nomination. Decisions did not often come easy as they met in the Holstein Journal’s office in Richmond Hill, Ont., on December 2nd to review the 209 highly competitive entries.
A total of 157 All-Canadian entries were submitted in the open individual classes in 2013, with 90 of these coming in the milking females and 67 in the heifers. In the cow classes, entry numbers ranged from eight in the 4-year-olds up to 14 in the mature cows, with 13 entries coming in both the milking yearlings and senior 2-year-olds. In the junior females, numbers ran from seven in the intermediate yearlings up to 12 in the senior yearlings. There were eight exceptional groups submitted for consideration in the Breeder’s Herd class. The five 4-H classes attracted a total of 44 entries, with classes ranging in size from seven to 10 entries. Holstein breeders from seven Canadian provinces, 12 states of the United States, Italy and Spain appear as exhibitors on the final list of nominations in the open classes. In the 4-H division, junior showmen from four Canadian provinces earned a nomination for their 4-H project animal.
The leading breeder and exhibitor of 2013 All-Canadian nominees by a wide margin in the open classes is Ferme Jacobs Inc., Cap-Sante, Que. The Jacobs family, who were Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor at the Royal Winter Fair in November, had a great year at the shows this past season and that success has carried over into the All-Canadian contest. A total of 12 animals carrying their Jacobs prefix earned an All-Canadian nomination in 2013, plus they also picked up a nomination in the Breeder’s Herd class as well. In a time when so many show animals are owned in partnership, it was a testament to the strength of this three-time Master Breeder award winning herd that 11 of those animals were also solely owned by Ferme Jacobs for either all or part of the show season, while the twelfth animal was owned in partnership with another breeder for the entire year. Ferme Jacobs can also be found as a partner in a mature cow nominee. Included in the Jacobs’ line-up are three homebred senior heifer calves who all earned nominations in that class. This marks only the sixth time in the history of the All-Canadian contest that one breeder has bred three nominated animals in one class, and the first time in 30 years that this has occurred. Not since the glory days of Hanover Hill Holsteins in 1983, when there were half the number of female classes offered in the contest, has one breeder bred three animals in one class. Other notable show herds of the past that have reached this remarkable achievement are Spring Farms in 1979, Rosafe Farms in 1953 and 1954, and Mount Victoria Farms (Montvic) in 1947. The Hanover Hill, Spring Farms and Rosafe “hat tricks” were all in milking age classes.
Runner-up for leading exhibitor is Gen-Com Holstein Ltd., Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Conseil, Que. Mario Comtois and his team at Gen-Com showed seven nominated animals for all or part of the show year in 2013. Tying for third place were Ferme Blondin, St-Placide, Que., and Ferme Jean-Paul Petitclerc & Fils Inc., St-Basile, Que., who each owned three nominated animals. Ferme Blondin’s name also appears on five other nominated animals that they own in partnership.
Second leading breeder in the contest is Ferme Jean-Paul Petitclerc & Fils whose Petitclerc prefix appears on three nominees, two of whom they still own. The Petitclercs also have a nominated Breeder’s Herd this year as well. Five other prefixes appear on two nominated animals in the open classes – Cobequid, Eastside, Kingsway, Phoenix and Rolling-Spring.
A tip of the hat should also go to Beaverbrock Farms, Cannington, Ont., who bred and owned three animals sporting their Beaverbrock prefix who gained nominations in the 4-H classes.
The most dominant sire in recent show history, Braedale Goldwyn, is again far out in front as the leading sire of All-Canadian nominees in the open classes for 2013. “Goldwyn” had 32 daughters, or 36% of the total number of females, nominated for All-Canadian this time. Of these 20, or 42%, were in the milking classes. This marks the sixth time this Semex bull has been the top sire following wins in 2012-11-10-09-07. Twenty-seven other bulls sired a nominated offspring in 2013. In second place is Pine-Tree Sid-ET with eight nominated daughters, the oldest of which are junior 2-year-olds. “Sid” is also the most popular sire in the 4-H division with five nominated daughters to his credit. Coming in with seven nominated daughters in the open classes is Gen-Mark Stmatic Sanchez, followed by Maple-Downs-I G W Atwood with five. Six bulls have three nominated daughters: Allyndale-I Attic, Crackholm Fever, Gillette Windbrook, Golden-Oaks St Alexander-ET, Regancrest Dundee-ET and Regancrest Reginald-ET.
The Holstein Journal mailed advance copies of the nomination pages on December 4th to 22 judges who will now comprise the All-Canadian Selection Committee. The votes of these judges will determine the All-Canadian, Reserve All-Canadian and Honourable Mention winners in each class. Serving on the All-Canadian Selection Committee will be the four members of the Nominating Committee, along with Pierre Boulet, Montmagny, Que.; Justin Burdette, Mercersburg, Penn.; Brian Carscadden, Guelph, Ont.; Marc Comtois, Victoriaville, Que.; Gerald Coughlin Jr., Peterborough, Ont.; David Crack Jr., Richmond, Que.; John Crowley, Hastings, Ont.; Tyler Doiron, Cap-Sante, Que.; Don Donnan, Stirling, Ont.; Chris Hill, Thurmont, Md.; Joel Lepage, Amqui, Que.; Callum McKinven, Canton-de-Hatley, Que.; Bruce Mode, Vankleek Hill, Ont.; Orville Schmidt, Leduc County, Alta.; Jeff Stephens, Troy, Ont.; Bloyce Thompson, Frenchfort, P.E.I.; Roger Turner, Sun Prairie, Wis.; and Mike West, Orangeville, Ont. The results of the All-Canadian Holstein contest will appear in the February issue of the Holstein Journal.
Congratulations to all of the exhibitors who earned a nomination in the All-Canadian contest! It is your hard work, dedication and financial commitment to shows, combined with the support of many other industry partners, that keeps Canadian shows strong, vibrant and exciting!
